Jeremy Iles- North

Jeremy Iles-North likes to play with digital images developed from mixed media: both acrylic painting and photography, often using macro techniques to find arresting new ways of presenting flowers.

He is working on a portfolio of orchid studies which are presented here on large canvas panels .

The artist comments: “ I was struck by the powerful structure and colours of the centre of this Palanaenopsis, with its almost phallic symbolism and dramatic intrusion on the eye. This not a plant to upset !”

The artist observes: “Having breakfast in the Kitchen one day I was caught by the early morning sun catching the cockerel at the window outside in the cold contrasted with my orchid in the warm. We live in two different worlds.”

The artist observes: ”There was an almost Japanese calligraphic quality to the way this orchid spray presented itself to me and I tried to capture this feeling with soft diffused lighting and a very simple but subtle antique green background.”

The artist notes:  “ I decided to study the orchid because of the enormous range of fanatastic varities, some delicate and some powereful like this dramatic but virginal Moth Orchid waiting to attract its own pollination. It seems to control its environment and destiny and I have tried to develop this power into the work”

The artist notes: “We perhaps need a reminder that these exotic plants love the humid, hot conditions of the rain forest. I see this one as longing to be in a mysterious secret place in the tropics, so I put it there.

Right: “The path to the Temple” edition of 10 mixed media  image 32.0 x 25.4 cms on canvas panel £99 unframed

The artist notes:  “ A soft light on a damp day suggested this study of a wonderful lilac Phalanaeopsis on the window sill, over a radiator, not a stress free environment for an orchid ! I went for soft unsaturated colours to empahsise the delicacy and fragility”

Left:“Lilac Philanaeopsis”, Limited edition of 10, image 76.2 x 45.7 cms on canvas panel £225

The artist comments: “ Vanda is an amazing Arial Orchid that hangs with its roots in our dining room, living off the humidity from a daily spray and a monthly ducking in a bucket of water with added nutrients. I have attempted to capture its exotic nature as my homage to the amazing  diversity of nature.

The artist observes: “ Lighting up a gloomy corner of the studio with its powerful colour saturation, this wonderful spray lightened up my day every time I entered.”

The artist comments: “ Only cats know how to dream like our ancestors once did, in relaxed harmony with their surroundings, perhaps in touch with the ancient ones. This is Homer`s favourite place where I like to think he dreams of beautiful things.
